MALMÖ, Sweden – April 4, 2024 – Avient Corporation, a leading provider of specialized and sustainable materials solutions and services, announced today that its site in Malmö, Sweden, completed the requirements to receive the ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) PLUS certification for its Mevopur™ Healthcare Bio-Based Polymer Solutions manufactured on site.

Mevopur Healthcare Bio-based Polymer Solutions offer a range of colorants and additives specifically developed for healthcare applications. These solutions are made with bio-derived polymers, including polypropylene, polyethylene, polycarbonate, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), and styrenics, with bio-derived content ranging from 70% to 100%. These solutions can be supplied as concentrates or ready-to-use formulations and can be used like fossil fuel-based solutions for injection molding, blow molding, and extrusion of healthcare products. Additionally, they can be recycled in the same channels as conventional fossil-based polymers. These solutions have numerous potential applications, such as components of drug delivery devices, in vitro diagnostic equipment, surgical instruments, medical devices, and pharmaceutical packaging. Like other Mevopur products, the bio-based polymer solutions are formulated with raw materials pre-tested to ISO, USP, EP, and ICH Q3D protocols, supporting their compliance with safety and regulatory requirements for use in healthcare.

In Europe, Mevopur concentrates and ready-to-use formulations are manufactured in the ISO 13485-2016 certified site of Malmö, Sweden. The site successfully underwent an audit by the certifying body DNV Business Assurance Sweden AB in January and has now received the ISCC PLUS certification in the bio-circular raw material category for its existing bio-based concentrates and formulations. Following the mass balance chain-of-custody approach, the amount of bio-based content is tracked through segregated bookkeeping and provided in the sustainability declaration for the Mevopur healthcare bio-based portfolio. The PCF (Product Carbon Footprint) value calculated with Avient’s recently launched third-party certified PCF calculator is also provided.

“The ISCC PLUS certification is another milestone in our commitment to supporting healthcare product manufacturers and brand owners in achieving their sustainability targets. The certification provides customers with a third-party assessed confirmation that our bio-based polymer solutions manufactured at our Malmö site meet high sustainability requirements,” said Volker Dickfeld, Senior Marketing Manager, Global Healthcare at Avient. “We’ve shown that increasing the sustainability of healthcare products without compromising regulatory compliance is possible if we all work together. Our contribution is working with resin producers and our in-house material experts to provide more sustainable and bio-compatible color and additive polymer solutions.”

The ISCC PLUS certification is a voluntary system applicable to the bioeconomy and circular economy for food, feed, chemicals, plastics, packaging, textiles, and renewable feedstock derived from a process using renewable energy sources. The European Commission recognizes it as compliant with the Renewable Energy Directive (recast) (RED II).
