Continuous Filament Winding

Constant cross-section and tapered epoxy tubing for lightweight, stiff poles with maximum durability

Continuous filament winding produces constant cross-section and tapered epoxy tubing by combining the principles of filament winding with pultrusion. This process provides customers with lightweight, stiff poles for maximum durability. Unlike conventional filament wound or pultruded tubing, reinforcements are precisely oriented to optimize the stiffness-to-weight ratio. Axial fibers (0 degrees) provide excellent tensile, compressive and flexural properties while biaxial (85 degree) fibers contribute burst, crush and transverse strengths. Tubes also provide excellent electrical insulation for construction applications.

Our continuous filament winding process capabilities can help you:

  • Produce tubing with alternating longitudinal (axial) and circumferential (biaxial) structural fibers using a continuous process to wind a mandrel through multiple winding stations
  • Provide flexural and tensile strength with the axial reinforcement, and crush and burst resistance, with the biaxial reinforcement
  • Manufacture continuously, at a much higher rate than standard filament winding
  • Formulate a resin matrix and fiber loading to meet the desired properties
  • Manufacture standard size tubing or customized tubing to the desired diameter and length

Thin wall tubes can be manufactured with diameters ranging from 0.20”—1.125”. The fabrication process allows for a unique axial and biaxial fiber orientation, as well as consistent and tapered cross-sections. PolyOne engineers work with customers to develop a specific resin matrix and fiber loading to meet the compressive, flexural, and tensile strengths required.
